Sydney Opera House: Preferred Candidate

As we can see, the Sydney Opera House was a well known icon for Sydney and also to the whole world. Eugene Goosen, a former composer of the symphony orchestra persuaded the government of Sydney to have its own opera house which should be constructed on Bennelong Point opposite the Harbour Bridge. An architectural design competition for the Sydney Opera House was held in 1957 and they decided to proceed with Jorn Utzon's design.

The Concept- The idea was originated from curved shells- see Jorn Utzon's quote "CONCEPT" for more information. The concert hall was developed from the idea from a mother drum.

Oppurtunites- I wanted to chose a building which has a unique design and not something which is boring. To examine how the building would actually look like in real life. Makes me inspired by the architecture of Sydney. To learn how I can visualise architectural designs which are simple but challenging.

Challenges- The design would take a lot of effort to put in. Some parts of the design would be complex to handle. The design has to be done bit by bit, can't be done in one go. The measurements need to be accurate and consistant.

Jorn Utzon Quotes
- CONCEPT-"I worked my way through the different possibilities and tried to derive the forms of fra rotational bodies that were geometrically determined by ellipses or parabolas; but finally I found a solution by deriving the forms from a surface of a sphere..."

-VISION- "Consider a gothic church and you can understand what it is I was aiming at."

Three Candidates of Architecture for representation

Sydney Opera House, Sydney, Australia, Jorn Utzon- This building would be the best candidate for representation because of the uniqueness and creative design idea revealed by the orange peels. The reason why I like to chose to represent this building because it's a well known landmark in Sydney by the aesthetics of the design. John Hancook Centre, Chicago, USA, SOM- This building will be the best candidiate for representation because the design of the building is quite easy to implement. The reason behind this is because of the magnificant engineering of the building done by Dr Khan. Another reason I like about this building is the design pattern of the exterior.

Empire State Building, NYC, Shreve Lamb and Harmon- The reason I like to represent this building because it's a well known icon in the early modern years. Another good reason why I like to represent this building is that technology hasn't been applied during this time and would be brilliant for representing the design on computer machines.

Final Shelter

I decided to focus on Lankymarleon's shelter, not about his character but I just find the shelter easy to implement. For designing the shelter, I doesn't end up as messy as the other shelters.

Draft Shelters

Draft Shelter One- Cormondon's Home
With Cormondon's home, I wanted to create a dodgy area. This can be revealed by the spikes of the shelter. However the design didn't turn out well because the interior was messy and it was a bit of a pain in the neck to create the interior.

Draft Shelter Two- Eagergroit's Home

With Eagergroit's home, I wanted to create a rocky stone age area. The antraphometrics of the Eagergroit would be accomplished well however, I may be a pain to expand the shelter to a bigger size to include spaces for eating, dancing, sleeping, toilet and recreation.

Draft Shelter Three- Lankymarleon's Home (Preferred One)

With Lankymarleon's home, I wanted to create a shelter where it is open and not enclosed. Enclosed areas like caves may not be the right shelter for a Lankymarleon because they're considered to be tall creatures. Anyway, how I created the shelter was the use of rocky blob looking shrubs joint together where the atmosphere is more like calm outdoor living. I decided to chose this design because it found it easy to implement. I decided to proceed with this design because it's my favourite one out of the shelter and I like to design something which is unique and innovative.
